The Scriptural Record

A classified catalog of biblical passages associated with giants, giant peoples, unusually tall individuals, and the Genesis 6 tradition. The categories deliberately distinguish a direct identification from a related passage, place-name, metaphor, or description of extraordinary stature.

Research rule: a verse is displayed according to what the text actually says. “Giant,” “Anakim,” “Rephaim,” “very tall,” and “Watcher-related” are not silently treated as identical accounts.

Before the Flood

Genesis 6:4 is the Bible's foundational pre-Flood giant passage. The KJV renders the Hebrew Nephilim as “giants.” Jude 6 is cataloged separately as a related angelic transgression text; Jude itself does not use the word giant.

Genesis 6:4

Direct Giant Reference

Nephilim / “giants” are placed in the earth in the pre-Flood setting and connected in the verse with the sons of God and daughters of men.

Read KJV Passage

6:4There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

Jude 1:6

Related Genesis 6 Text

A New Testament account of angels who did not keep their first estate. It is relevant to the Watcher interpretation of Genesis 6, but it is not itself a direct giant passage.

Read KJV Passage

1:6And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

Rephaim, Zuzim & Emim

These passages are important because the named peoples appear centuries before the Israelite conquest accounts. Genesis 14:5 places Rephaim, Zuzim, and Emim together in the campaign of Chedorlaomer.

Genesis 14:5

Named Peoples

Rephaim, Zuzim, and Emim appear together in an early post-Flood military account.

Anakim, Emim, Zamzummim & Og

This is the densest biblical cluster. The texts identify giant-associated peoples, describe exceptional stature, name surviving lineages, and identify Og of Bashan with the remnant of the giants.

Anak / Giants

The spies encounter descendants of Anak at Hebron. The report culminates with the KJV's explicit “giants” language in verse 33.

Read KJV Passages

13:22And they ascended by the south, and came unto Hebron; where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

13:28Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.

13:32And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.

13:33And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.

Deuteronomy 1:28

Great & Taller

The Anakim are recalled as a people “greater and taller” than Israel.

Read KJV Passage

1:28Whither shall we go up? our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying, The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there.

Deuteronomy 2:10–11

Emim

The Emim are described as great, many, and tall, and accounted giants as the Anakim.

Read KJV Passage

2:10The Emims dwelt therein in times past, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims;

2:11Which also were accounted giants, as the Anakims; but the Moabites call them Emims.

Deuteronomy 3:11, 13

Og of Bashan

Og is explicitly described as remaining from the remnant of giants; his iron bedstead is measured in the text.

Read KJV Passages

3:11For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of giants; behold, his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbath of the children of Ammon? nine cubits was the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man.

3:13And the rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, being the kingdom of Og, gave I unto the half tribe of Manasseh; all the region of Argob, with all Bashan, which was called the land of giants.

Deuteronomy 9:2

Anakim

A second explicit description of the children of Anak as “great and tall.”

Read KJV Passage

9:2A people great and tall, the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand before the children of Anak!

Joshua 11:21–22

Anakim Survivors

The Anakim are cut off from much of the land, with survivors specifically located at Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod.

Read KJV Passage

11:21And at that time came Joshua, and cut off the Anakims from the mountains, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel: Joshua destroyed them utterly with their cities.

11:22There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel: only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, there remained.

14:15And the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba; which Arba was a great man among the Anakims. And the land had rest from war.

15:13And unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a part among the children of Judah, according to the commandment of the LORD to Joshua, even the city of Arba the father of Anak, which city is Hebron.

Goliath and the descendants of the giant

The later biblical giant tradition concentrates around Gath. Goliath's stated height is preserved in 1 Samuel 17, while 2 Samuel 21 and 1 Chronicles 20 record additional warriors associated with “the giant” at Gath.

1 Samuel 17:4, 7

Goliath

Goliath of Gath is given an explicit height and unusually heavy military equipment.

Read KJV Passages

17:4And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.

17:7And the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him.

2 Samuel 21:15–22

Sons of the Giant

A sequence of Philistine battles names Ishbibenob, Saph, another Gittite warrior, and a six-fingered/six-toed man. Verse 22 concludes that four were born to the giant in Gath.

Read KJV Passage

21:15Moreover the Philistines had yet war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines: and David waxed faint.

21:16And Ishbibenob, which was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear weighed three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being girded with a new sword, thought to have slain David.

21:18And it came to pass after this, that there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob: then Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Saph, which was of the sons of the giant.

21:19And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.

21:20And there was yet a battle in Gath, where was a man of great stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the giant.

21:22These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.

1 Chronicles 20:4–8

Parallel Gath Record

The Chronicler preserves the parallel tradition, including Sippai, Lahmi, and the man of great stature with twenty-four digits.

Read KJV Passage

20:4And it came to pass after this, that there arose war at Gezer with the Philistines; at which time Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Sippai, that was of the children of the giant: and they were subdued.

20:5And there was war again with the Philistines; and Elhanan the son of Jair slew Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, whose spear staff was like a weaver's beam.

20:6And yet again there was war at Gath, where was a man of great stature, whose fingers and toes were four and twenty, six on each hand, and six on each foot: and he also was the son of the giant.

20:7But when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea David's brother slew him.

20:8These were born unto the giant in Gath; and they fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.

Extraordinary stature, imagery & place-names

These passages belong to the wider biblical vocabulary surrounding giants and the Rephaim, although not every reference describes a direct encounter with a literal giant.

1 Chronicles 11:23

Measured Height

An Egyptian warrior is explicitly said to be five cubits high, but the passage does not identify him as a Rephaim, Anakim, or “giant.”

Read KJV Passage

11:23And he slew an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits high; and in the Egyptian's hand was a spear like a weaver's beam; and he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian's hand, and slew him with his own spear.

Amos 2:9

Extraordinary Stature

The Amorite is poetically described as having height like cedars and strength like oaks. The verse does not use the KJV word “giant.”

Read KJV Passage

2:9Yet destroyed I the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath.

Job 16:14

Simile

The KJV uses “giant” as a comparison. This is giant imagery, not a report of a giant person.

Read KJV Passage

16:14He breaketh me with breach upon breach, he runneth upon me like a giant.

Joshua 15:8; 17:15; 18:16

Valley / Place-name

These preserve “valley of the giants” / Rephaim geography. They are important for mapping the tradition, but are not themselves giant encounters.

Read Selected KJV Verses

15:8And the border went up by the valley of the son of Hinnom unto the south side of the Jebusite; the same is Jerusalem: and the border went up to the top of the mountain that lieth before the valley of Hinnom westward, which is at the end of the valley of the giants northward:

17:15And Joshua answered them, If thou be a great people, then get thee up to the wood country, and cut down for thyself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the giants, if mount Ephraim be too narrow for thee.

18:16And the border came down to the end of the mountain that lieth before the valley of the son of Hinnom, and which is in the valley of the giants on the north, and descended to the valley of Hinnom, to the side of Jebusi on the south, and descended to Enrogel,

Why the distinction matters: these verses preserve biblical vocabulary associated with giants and the Rephaim. A geographical name, metaphor, or poetic comparison is therefore distinguished from a direct physical giant encounter.

Names are not interchangeable

The next research layer separates the biblical terms and peoples instead of treating every one as a synonym for “Nephilim.”

Nephilim

Rephaim

An ancient people/term appearing in several contexts; Og is linked to their remnant.

Emim

Earlier inhabitants described as great, many, tall, and accounted giants as the Anakim.

Zuzim

Named in Genesis 14:5 alongside Rephaim and Emim.

Zamzummim

Ammonite name for a people described as great, many, and tall as the Anakim.

Og

1 Enoch

Especially 1 Enoch 6–16 · 54–56 · 60 · 64–67 · 83–89 · 106–107

Enoch gives the most extensive surviving ancient account of the Watcher tradition. It describes the descent of rebellious heavenly beings, their unions with women, giant offspring, escalating violence, forbidden instruction, Enoch's intercession, and divine judgment.

  • Watchers descend and take wives.
  • Giant offspring consume the earth and turn to violence.
  • Forbidden knowledge is transmitted to humanity.
  • The Watchers and their offspring receive separate judgments.
  • Later sections preserve Flood visions and the unusual-birth tradition concerning Noah.

Jubilees

Jubilees 4–7 · 10

Jubilees retells Genesis while preserving a related Watcher-and-giant tradition. It places the Watchers in Jared's generation, describes their transgression and giant offspring, links their violence with the Flood, and later describes evil spirits troubling Noah's descendants.

  • Watchers appear during Jared's generation.
  • Their unions with women produce giant offspring.
  • Violence and corruption precede the Flood.
  • Noah teaches his descendants about the earlier rebellion and judgment.
  • Post-Flood evil spirits create a second continuity problem.

Genesis Apocryphon

1Q20 · Noah material

The Genesis Apocryphon expands portions of Genesis and contains remarkable Noah traditions. Lamech becomes alarmed at Noah's extraordinary appearance and fears that the child may somehow be connected with the Watchers, prompting consultation with Enoch.

  • Noah's birth is portrayed as extraordinary.
  • Lamech fears a Watcher connection.
  • The concern is answered within an expanded patriarchal narrative.
  • This is an ancient interpretive witness—not a replacement for Genesis.

Baruch

Baruch 3:26–28

Baruch contains one of the clearest ancient descriptions of the famous giants of old: figures remembered for extraordinary stature and warfare, yet presented as part of a world whose power did not grant divine wisdom.

  • Giants are remembered as ancient and famous.
  • Exceptional stature is explicitly part of the description.
  • The theological point contrasts physical greatness with wisdom.

The Qumran Enoch manuscripts are crucial physical witnesses to the antiquity of Enochic traditions. They should not be counted as an additional independent literary source on top of 1 Enoch; rather, they are surviving manuscript evidence for portions of the Enochic corpus.

Why this mattersThe fragments establish that Enochic literature was copied in Aramaic in ancient Jewish manuscript culture long before modern giant literature.

Deep Questions to Ponder

The texts give us remarkable information—but they do not answer every question raised by the record. These panels deliberately identify proposal as proposal. They are invitations to investigate, not conclusions of the museum.

01📖
Continuity

If the Nephilim were destroyed in the Flood, why does Genesis 6:4 say “and also after that”?

Does the phrase anticipate later giant traditions, or are we assuming a relationship the verse does not fully explain?

Primary text · Genesis 6:4
02♟
Peoples & Lineages

How should the post-Flood Anakim, Rephaim, Emim and Zamzummim be related—if at all—to the pre-Flood Nephilim?

Are these the same phenomenon, related populations, exceptionally large humans, or entirely different peoples?

Numbers 13 · Deuteronomy 2–3
03♧
Inherited Lineage Hypothesis

Could one of the wives aboard the Ark have carried inherited ancestry connected to the pre-Flood unions?

The biblical text gives no genealogy for the sons' wives. Could inherited ancestry explain later giant populations?

Hypothesis · Scripture does not state this
04✦
Second Incursion Hypothesis

Did another angelic incursion occur after the Flood?

Could something resembling Genesis 6 have happened again? Scripture records later giants but does not explicitly narrate a second Watcher descent.

area for further study · No second event explicitly recorded
05?
Another Possibility

Could both major continuity explanations be wrong?

Perhaps inherited lineage and a second incursion are both proposed solutions to a problem whose actual explanation lies somewhere else.

Surviving Memory

Did Noah and his family preserve knowledge of the pre-Flood world simply through memory?

The eight people aboard the Ark were eyewitness survivors of the old world within the Genesis narrative.

Genesis 5–9
07▤
The Lost Archive?

Did the survivors carry written records, diagrams, measurements, astronomical knowledge or technological instructions aboard the Ark?

Ancient traditions strongly associate Enoch with recorded knowledge. Did physical information cross the Flood boundary?

Possibility · No surviving Ark archive is known
08▰
Surviving Structures

Could post-Flood civilizations have encountered surviving pre-Flood structures and attempted to reproduce their construction techniques?

A surviving monument could transmit knowledge indirectly—even if its builders and original infrastructure were gone.

Research hypothesis · Not established by Scripture
09⚒
Watcher-Taught Knowledge

If forbidden knowledge existed before the Flood, how much of it disappeared—and how much survived?

Genesis describes early metallurgy, music and husbandry; Enochic tradition adds prohibited instruction attributed to the Watchers.

Genesis 4:20–22 · 1 Enoch 7–8
10⚙
Technology Without Infrastructure

Could a technique survive culturally even after people lost the tools or infrastructure required to perform it?

A survivor could remember the principle of a process while no longer possessing the workforce, machinery or resources needed to reproduce it.

Cultural transmission question
11✧
Memory or Myth?

Are ancient accounts of gods teaching metallurgy, astronomy, agriculture, architecture or writing distant cultural memories of something resembling the Watcher tradition?

Or are similar stories independent mythological developments that emerged for entirely different reasons?

Comparative question · No conclusion assumed
12♜
The Post-Flood Giants

If post-Flood giants existed, were they genetically related to the earlier Nephilim, a separate phenomenon, or exceptionally large human populations described with overlapping terminology?

The later biblical record contains multiple named giant-associated peoples and individuals without explicitly explaining their biological relationship to Genesis 6.
